Doctor Who? 5 Things You Need To Know About Matt Smith’s Successor Peter Capaldi

05 August 2013 by

The BBC chose a live show hosted by Zoe Ball as the forum to announce 55-year old Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor Who replacing Matt Smith. He was the bookies favourite suggesting a potential leak but just how will he fare as a Timelord? Some have suggested that at 55, he's too old to play the coveted role as the programme has a predominantly younger audience but with his calibre of acting talent, can he bring a new dimension to the man with two hearts? Here are five things you need to know about Peter Capaldi before making up your own mind...

1. They might need a swear box on set

Best known for playing foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in the BBC’s The Thick Of It, Doctor Who’s primetime Saturday slot and family audience will mean the bad language will be banished for sure. It's quite hard to imagine him saying an entire sentence without any swears...

2. He's old enough to be Clara's dad

We love the chemistry between Matt Smith and his assistant Clara played by 27-year old Jenna-Louise Coleman but with a 28-year gap between her and Mr Capaldi, we recks he might have to play more of a paternal role.

3. He’s already a part of the Doctor Who family.

Peter had a recurring role in BBC Three’s Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood where he was a liaison to the British Government and an ambassador to the 456 (that would be aliens, then). Unless you’re a hardcore fan, it’s probably not going to be much of an issue.

4. He's the third Scotsman to play Doctor Who

Peter is the third Scottish actor to nab the coveted role after David Tennant and Sylvester McCoy. David adopted an English accent while playing the Doctor but it remains to be seen if Peter’s Glaswegian lilt will make it into the Tardis…

5. He’s BFF’s with Brad and Ange

Before playing King Kinloch in Maleficent alongside Angelina Jolie, Peter had a role in Brad Pitt’s zombie movie World War Z. His character tries to find a cure for the pandemic and was called W.H.O. Doctor – coincidence or what?!

So what's your verdict on the new Who? Are you a fan of Mr Capaldi or would you rather see a younger actor taking the role? Have your say by voting below...
