It’s time to go numb on the sofa and get phone-finger cramp, tonight, Comic Relief is baaaack! Over eight hours, Brit comedy godheads like Ricky Gervais, French & Saunders, Rowan Aktinson and Miranda Hart will keep the LOLs coming.
Shockingly for those of us who remember buying our first bulbous red nose, the charity turns 25 this year. To celebrate we’ve collected our favourite moments from past shows.
1) Ali G Interviews The Beckhams
Pretty much everything Ali G touched at this point turned to gold (yup, it was before he made that stinker of a film…), and so it made sense for him to interview the then new Brit royal couple, Posh Spice and David Beckham. Squirm at the early noughties fashions and be amazed at Sacha Baron Cohen’s ability to push both the comedy and taste envelope.
2) Dawn French Snogs Hugh Grant
Who could forget the moment Dawn, trussed up in a version of that dress, sucked face with a still floppy haired Hugh Grant? It still makes up feel a bit funny, TBH.
3) The Sugar Lumps VS The Spice Girls
Watch as The Sugar Lumps (aka French, Saunders, Kathy Burke, Lulu and Llewella Gideon) rehearse their Spice Girl like routine as The Sugar Lumps (complete with ‘WOAH BODYFOOORM’ moment) before teaming up with the actual Spice Girls for ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ Jennifer Saunders makes an uncanny Geri, don’t you think?
4) Mamma Mia gets ribbed
“IT’S A NONESENSE!” screams the trailer and this parody of the ABBA musical-turned-film ‘Mamma Mia’ is spot on, from Miranda Hart as the hapless director to Sue Perkins as an off-the-wall producer and Joanna Lumley as Christine Baranski (“just do Patsy, that’s all you can do”).
5) Uptown Downstairs Abbey
Another perfectly pitched parody, this time of Downtown Abbey. The hilarious cast, which includes Victoria Wood, Harry Enfield, Kim Cattrall and Simon Callow (as smug author Julian Fellows), re-create the world of the Grantham’s and staff brilliantly. Keep an eye out for the freshly ironed starched newspapers and the ‘teas maid’.
