Chris Martin has broken his silence about his conscious uncoupling from Gwyneth Paltrow (one day we’ll be able to type the phrase ‘conscious uncoupling’ without guffawing, but today is not that day). Speaking to Zayn Lowe on his BBC Radio 1 show, Chris opened up about the split, but managed not to mention Gwyneth by name, or let slip how many Big Macs he’s guzzled since they parted ways. You can listen to the whole interview at 8pm tonight, but if you can’t wait until then, here are some of the things that we’ve gleamed…
1. He’s feeling philosophical about the split
‘I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way’, said Chris. ‘I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it’s love or money, kids, or illness... You have to really not run away from that stuff.’
2. He’s had some personal problems
‘About two years ago I was a mess really because I can't enjoy the thing that we are good at and I can't enjoy the great things around me because I'm burdened by this’, said Chris. ‘I've got to not blame anyone else and make some changes. I wouldn’t use the word breakdown, this was more a realisation about trying to grow up basically.’
3. And he blames himself for the split
‘Up to a certain point in my life I wasn’t completely vulnerable and it caused some problems’, he admitted. ‘If you don’t let love really in then you can’t really give it back.’
4. In fact, he still thinks Gwyneth is ‘wonderful’
Continuing to address how his own issues contributed to the split, Chris said: ‘If you can’t open yourself up, you can’t appreciate the wonder inside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, but because of your own issues you cannot let that be celebrated in the right way.’ We wish our ex still agonised over having not celebrated us in the right way, instead of just blocking us on Facebook.
5. He’s been stocking up on self-help books
Or at least that’s what it sounds like. ‘What changed for me was - I don’t want to go through life being scared of it, being scared of love, being scared of rejection, being scared of failure.'
6. He thinks Kanye is misunderstood
Moving on from Gwyneth, Chris also had some kind words for Kanye West. ‘That guy [Kanye] is amazing and I think he is misunderstood by people who only look on the surface. I understand what he is talking about and I understand what he means’, he said. In that case, maybe he can translate for the rest of us?
7. He had a hot flush when he met Harry Styles
Is there anyone – man, woman or vegetable – immune from Harry Styles’s charm? Apparently not, as Chris also revealed that he had a funny turn when he met everyone’s favourite cherub-faced man-child. ‘Harry has come to a couple of our shows’, said Chris. ‘I was enamoured with his hair cut. I was like this, 'I was pretty sure I was a straight guy before' - I was having a hot flush.’ Could this be the real reason behind his split from Gwyn? (Probably not, no)
