When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin made a rare public appearance at the Golden Globes in January, they looked stronger than ever. Sat side-by-side, the couple laughed along at the star-studded event with Chris's arm wrapped around his wife. One observer told Us Weekly that they were 'extremely cute together.'
As for their attire, Gwynnie looked as resplendent as ever in a Valentino dress that showed off her killer pins and Chris wore a black suit accessorised with a 'Love' badge. Bless him! There was no hint that these two would be announcing the end of their decade-long marriage less than two months later - or was there?
Because we've started to notice a pattern when it comes to breakups in celebsville. Rather than going into hiding, Gwyneth and Chris gave the media exactly what they wanted: a final shot of them together, looking loved-up and super-glam. If we didn't have the pictures of them looking lovestruck at the Golden Globes (or indeed at Sean Penn's charity gala just one night before), there'd only be a few on-the-street shots of the them to use for the zillion stories inundating the Internet today *raises hand* But they're not the first couple to provide the perfect 'in happier times' photo...

Just look at Madonna and Guy Ritchie who put up a united front on 1st September 2008 at the 'RocknRolla' premiere. Fast forward a month and the couple were announcing the end of their marriage. Then there's Katy Perry and Russell Brand whose last red carpet hurrah was on 3rd December 2011. By 30th December, Russell had filed for divorce from his popstar wife.
But perhaps Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston is the most famous example. They announced their split on 7th January when just the day before, they were photographed on holiday in Anguilla kissing tenderly on the beach. It sends a message to the world that this break-up really is amicable (even when the reality might be far from it).
Considering Gwyneth and Chris were notoriously private and rarely photographed together, these final shots of them together are all the more significant. So were these final public appearance a tactical move? Or were they genuinely getting on famously weeks before parting ways? Either way, it's worked rather well.
