Love 'em or hate 'em, selfies have become a 'thing' and now the social media trend has been recognised by none other than the Oxford Dictionaries. Yes, 'selfie' has been crowned word of the year thanks to its frequency in the English language had increased by 17,000% in the last year.
Let's be honest, we've all spent hours perfecting our photo faces, gazing into the sharp end of a custom-designed app, and snapping away. Of course, Instagram has played a major part in the rise of selfie-ism thanks to zillions of people posting self-portraits every day and stars from Justin Bieber to Cara Delevingne have used it as a way to treat their fans. In fact, since Instagram's launch, over 57 million selfies have been captured and posted to the hashtag #selfie. Phewf.
‘Since launching Instagram more than three years ago, we've seen the community grow to 150 million people. The selfie hashtag has grown and evolved through the community in this time, with hundreds of thousands of one-handed self-portraits being posted on Instagram every day, as well as creative and innovative twists on the trend, including #petselfiez and #selfiesunday,' said Hannah Waldram, Community Manager EMEA at Instagram. 'From some of the UK's top musicians and models feeding the selfie trend, including Ellie Goulding, Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora, to great British icons joining the fun, including Paul Smith and Jamie Oliver, the selfie has expanded beyond our community to become a global phenomenon.'
But who's the best selfie-taker? Well, Alexa Chung has been named the best at making us Brits feel envious thanks to her snapper skills. While Miley Cyrus and selfie addict Kim Kardashian – who started the latest craze for belfies – were both named as the celebs who most make us cringe.
