Brits Awards 2013: Singer Tom Odell Wins The Critics' Choice Award

20 December 2012 by

Expect to see big things from Tom Odell in 2013. Why? He’s just been awarded the Brit Awards 2013 Critics' Choice, the first male to scoop the accolade. Although 22 year old Tom has been writing songs since he was 13, he’s yet to release his debut album and it’s this that made him eligible for the gong in the first place.

'I’m thrilled and honoured to win the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award,’ said Tom. ‘I genuinely can’t believe it. Thank you so much. Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the Award already, I just hope I don’t let the boys down!'

The winner is chosen by a panel of industry experts, journalists and heads of music at leading tv and radio stations tipping a British artist for mainstream success in the coming year. And those amazing females Tom alluded to? Previous winners have been Emeli Sande (2012, face of anything to do with the Olympics which requires a song), Jessie J (2011, doing it like a dude on BBC reality show The Voice), Ellie ‘I sang at the royal wedding reception’ Goulding (2010), Florence and the Machine (2009, the fashion world’s BFF) and Adele (2008, say. no. more).

So yes, we can expect some pretty big things from him in the months to come if previous winners successes are anything to go by. Oh and he’s already drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Chris Martin but if that’s not enough to convince you otherwise, check out the video below from his recently released EP, Songs From Another Love…
