BAFTA Awards 2013: Elizabeth Olsen and Juno Temple Are Amongst Nominees For EE Rising Star Award

It certainly seems like girl power is back on the menu. Nominations have just been announced for the EE Rising Star Award by Pippa Harris, which will be presented at The EE British Academy Film Awards, aka: the BAFTAs. A panel of judges including our very own TV columnist Paul Flynn had the enviable task of producing the shortlist of five and we’re delighted to offer our congratulations to Alicia Vikander, Andrea Riseborough, Elizabeth Olsen, Juno Temple and Suraj Sharma.

BAFTA Awards 2013: Elizabeth Olsen & Juno Temple Are Amongst Nominees For EE Rising Star Award

The EE Rising Star Award is the only BAFTA award voted for by the public. Last years winner was Adam Deacon who joined the hallowed alumni of previous winners including Kristen Stewart and Tom Hardy. In fact, Adam was one of five guys in the running for the prestigious award so we’re pretty chuffed that this year, four out of the five nominees are women.

The criteria? Well, developed by EE, the Rising Star Award is given to a young actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition and who has begun to capture the imagination of the British public and it’s fair to say that each of this year’s nominees fit the bill. 5. Suraj Sharma

Believe it or not, 19 year old Suraj’s debut acting role was the lead in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. At just 17, his middle class upbringing in South Delhi was turned on its head as he was cast as Pi Patel even celebrating his 18th birthday with the films crew while filming the lifeboat scenes in a specially constructed wave tank in Taiwan. After 3,000 young hopefuls auditioned for the part, Suraj only went along because his brother promised to buy him lunch. Looks as though he’ll be buying lunch for his brother for the foreseeable future…

Joseph Taylor (Mon Jan 07 13:39:43 GMT 2013): I am dismayed that Holliday Grainger isn't on this list. Why wasn't she included?
Joseph Taylor (Mon Feb 11 00:43:49 GMT 2013): I have had no replies to my complaint. Surely, I can't be the only one who thinks she ought to have been on the list of nominees for the specialist EE/BAFTA Rising Star category. Her performance as Estella in 'Great Expectations' should've guaranteed her inclusion in this category.
