There’s already a pretty big roll call of singers-turned-actors – Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce – but the latest celeb to take their turn on the big screen is Adam Levine (of Maroon 5, Moves Like Jagger fame). Yes, the cheeky singer has managed to bag himself a starring role (we know, not just a cameo) alongside Keira Knightley in Can A Song Save Your Life. So just how do you make the transition from pop star to cinema?
1. Make the most of your contacts
Adam went to the same school as comic actor Jonah Hill. Incidentally, his brother also manages Maroon 5. They’re still tight now and Adam also counts Jason Segel and Jake Gyllenhaal among his inner circle so, you know, that probably helps open doors…
2. Don’t be afraid to start small
Ok, we’d hardly call a coaching job on The Voice USA small but it certainly gave Mr Levine a taste of the limelight. He also had a recurring role in American Horror Story and played himself in an episode of 30 Rock.
3. Date models. Loads of them
Dating Gisele Bundchen and Bar Rafaeli certainly didn’t hurt Leo’s career and Adam too seems to have a penchant for model types. In July, it was reported that he had reconciled with his ex-girlfriend Behati Prinsloo, a Namibian Victoria’s Secret model, and the happy couple are now engaged to be married. Awwww.
4. Host Saturday Night Live
There’s no better way to ingratiate yourself with a whole bunch of creative types and erm, all of America than successfully sending yourself up by hosting Saturday Night Live. Highlights included, ‘Because like all successful singers, I knew it would only be a matter of time before I would overreach and try acting.’ LOLs.
5. Don’t be too proud to ask for advice
We’ve already touched on Adam’s actor pals. In an interview with Inked magazine last year, when talking about his role in American Horror Story he said, ‘The first thing I did when I got the job was ask friends who are actors what the fuck I was supposed to do.’ If only it was that simple, eh?
