One of the hippest, hottest and sunniest festivals is finally here. Forget V, Glastonbury and Bestival – Coachella is THE festival that the stars flock to and cool girls count as their second home.
And who can blame them? Unlike British alternatives, where festival-goers are on a diet of dodgy burgers, tiny tents and mud, Coachella in Indo, California offers its music lovers a slice of that so-Cal life we’d all love a piece of.
The two-week festival has seen everyone from Madonna to The Cure perform across its stages and is a hit with the likes of Rihanna and Katy Perry gracing the grassy planes. With headliners including the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Blur, Coachella 2013 looks set to be the best yet. So leave your wellies at the door, slip on something a little more comfortable (preferably ripped denim shorts) and join us as we re-live the 10 best Coachella moments EVER...
1. Madonna stole the show Coachella 2006
There was many a raised eyebrow amongst the indie-loving festival-goers when it was announced the one and only Madonna would be taking to the stage at Coachella 2006. Naysayers soon piped down and instead put on their dancing shoes, as Madge gave the crowd a show to remember.
2. The robot that gate-crashed the VIP section
You wouldn’t get this at Glasto. A remote-controlled robot gate-crashed a VIP area of Coachella. The bot was spotted smoking (yes, really) and chatting up models and running after them shouting ‘I love you’ when the rejected his advances.
3. Dr Dre & Snoop resurrect Tupac
Coachella went all hip-hop on us in 2012, but the crowd were anything but complaining. Dr Dre & Snoop Dog wowed with tunes from their early days.
4. The Cure got cut short – but that didn’t stop them!
Brit-band the Cure are famed for their impressively long sets and at Coachella in 2009, they didn’t disappoint. The gig went on for a marathon 2-and-a-half-hour and was stopped mid-song by the producers who cut the microphones.
5. The Pixies concluded their much-awaited tour
After a painfully long 11 year hiatus, the band returned with a sell-out 16 date tour, concluding at Coachella in 2004 and was the festival's first sell out show.
6. Daft Punk 2006
When Daft Punk hit the stage in 2006, it was undoubtedly one of Coachella’s most legendary performances and were-you-there moments. Emerging kitted out robot-style, the band played an 80 min set around a giant LED pyramid.
7. Paul McCartney
Even as Paul McCartney took to the stage in 2009, there were many doubters as to his place at Coachella. However his performance is now hailed as one of the greatest moments in festival history.
8. Florence Welch turned into a bat
And we loved it. Only at Coachella, eh?
