With a new season of Homeland about to hit our screens, we can’t wait for another round of Carrie-Brody shaped shenanigans. So we were very excited to leaf through this recent interview with Claire Danes in New Yorker magazine. Here are 5 things we learned from it.
1) Alicia Silverstone Nearly Got Her Part In My So Called Life
...But she was too pretty. Producer Marshall Herskovitz said: “Alicia is so beautiful that that would have affected her experience of the world. People would have been telling her she was beautiful since she was six years old. You can’t put that face in what’s been written for this girl.” So Claire was cast as Angela Chase instead.
2) Jared Leto Taught Claire How To Kiss
Aged 15 (when My So Called Life was shot) Claire was not exactly worldly wise, and had to be taught a few things. In the script, Angela who was obsessed with Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto) was instructed “to kiss his face”. Claire was flummoxed. “I was, like, ‘kiss his face’? What is that? I had no idea what it meant. Jared had to coach me.”
3) Leonardo DiCaprio Knew She Was Right For Juliette
Although many actresses auditioned for the coverted role of Juliette in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film Romeo + Juliette, co-star Leonardo DiCaprio knew she would be right for the role. “She was the only girl that looked me in the eye in auditions,” he said.
4) Homeland Season 3 Will See Carrie Going Through Some Changes
In the article, it's revealed that Carrie will go off her meds in Season 3 because Carrie blames herself and her medicated state of mind for the C.I.A. car bombing which saw off Season 2. “I want to see more of the boring work involved in just maintaining a healthy plateau,” Claire said. “I think we have to see her slog through the daily grind. I think we owe it to audiences.”
5) Season Three Will See Less Carrie-Brody Action
“(Damian Lewis) has a slightly cheeky, naughty on-set demeanour, which I’m missing now that our characters are so physically estranged in the third season," Claire revealed. "I can throw hard and fast and he’ll always catch the ball and return it in surprising ways.”
