The weekend is within sniffing distance. Here’s how to make it a good one
1) See Nebraska
Low-key laughs are what drive this black and white road movie, in cinemas from today. Directed by Alexander Payne who is responsible for Sideways and The Descendants, in Nebraska, we see elderly man Woody (Bruce Dern) and his son David (Will Forte) embark on a road trip to Woody’s fading Nebraskan hometown. The cinematic shots of the mid-America landscape are stunning.
2) Get festive with Leona Leona Lewis’s new album
Christmas, With Love is out this week. It’s rammed with classics including Silent Night and I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday. There’s also an original track One More Sleep which she’ll be performing on the X Factor semi-final tomorrow night – seven years (seven years!) after she won the competition.
3) Write your Christmas cards
While you’ve got Leona on the speakers, you could write your season’s greetings and get them in them in the post pronto. We like these beauties from the V&A shop.
4) Eat at Ember Yard
Ember Yard is Soho’s hottest new restaurant – in more than one sense. Almost everything on the menu is cooked on a charcoal grill, including the hot smoked old spot pork belly with Basque cider glaze. The inventive cocktails are also smoky – try Il Promo Di Maria, a concoction of gin, elderflower, prosecco, cassis, edible flowers … and strawberry smoke, book here: emberyard.co.uk.
5) Snap up a design bargain
Head to the Crafty Fox Market in Brixton, London, on Saturday and Sunday to snap up Christmas presents … and a thing or two for yourself. There’s fashion, interiors, accessories and jewellery from emerging designers. craftyfoxmarket.co.uk
