There was bound to be some jaw-dropping moments at the MTV Video Music Awards last night. This is the event that gave us Lady Gaga's meat dress, after all. From Miley Cyrus stepping out of the spotlight and allowing her homeless friend to take centre stage to Blue Ivy bopping along to her mum's music, here's a recap of the best moments from the VMAs...

1. The red carpet parade

Taylor Swift went more daring than ever in a Mary Katrantzou playsuit, Rita Ora got into the Left Leg action thanks to her Donna Karan gown and Amber Rose wore, well, not a lot. But the best red carpet moment surely came when Katy Perry and Riff Raff arrived clad in denim-on-denim Versace in homage to THAT iconic Britney and Justin moment. Genius! 2. Miley Cyrus's homeless friend accepted her prize

The 'Wrecking Ball' singer was given the Video of the Year gong, but homeless date, 22-year-old Jesse, was invited to accept the honour on her behalf. In an emotional speech, he said: "I am accepting this award for the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I'm one of those people. I've survived in shelters all over the city. I've cleaned your hotel rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life. Although I've been invisible to you I have a lot of the same dreams that have brought me to you tonight."

He then directed fans to visit Miley's official Facebook page, where a statement was posted encouraging people to help "end youth homelessness". In a statement, she wrote: "Help me raise awareness and funds to end youth homelessness! This is just the beginning for me, but we're going to get started now by focusing on My Friend's Place, a homeless center for young people in Hollywood."

3. Nicki Minaj's (almost) wardrobe malfunction

The 'Anaconda' star had sang her raunchy hit single, but there wasn't enough time for a full costume change before the next part of her performance, leaving her clutching her top to retain her modesty. As she returned to the stage to sing 'Bang Bang' with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, Nicki's dress came lose and she had to perform while clutching her black gown together. Yikes.

"It felt amazing to open the show. We ran out of time getting the dress zipped up," the star said after the performance. And on Instagram, she shrugged off the kerfuffle, admitting it could have been worse. She wrote: "God is good. As long as a nipple didn't come out to play, I'm fine."

4. Taylor Swift being the supportive BFF

There's guaranteed to be at least a few decent Taylor Swift GIFs after an awards show - and the VMAs didn't let us down. As well as her usual shimmying from the sidelines, it was Swifty's reaction to her pal winning a Moon Man that was most GIF-able. Lorde scooped the award for Best Rock Video and TayTay proved why she's the best BFF (like, ever).

Oh, and she tweeted about it too...

5. Beyonce Blue Ivy stole the show

Mrs Carter swept the board with four prizes, and she was joined by her husband Jay Z and two-year-old daughter Blue Ivy as she was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The 'Drunk in Love' singer's performance was nothing short of mesmirising as she performed an impressive medley covering the entirety of her recent self-titled album in an amazing 15-minute set. Make sure you watch it in full here. But perhaps our favourite bit of the Carter show was this Vine. WE. DIE.
