The 10 Best Bits You Need To Know About The 2013 MTV VMAs

27 August 2013 by

So we've seen what the stars wore on the MTV VMAs red carpet - and Lordy, what a feast for the eyes it was! - but what happens when the biggest names in the land of music were shoved into one arena? A whole lotta shenanigans! For starters, we had Miley Cyrus causing hysteria with her cheeky twerking, Lady Gaga shimmying about with a pair of clam shells covering her bosom, Taylor Swift taking a cheeky swipe at Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran setting tongues a-wagging by cosying up to Ellie Goulding.

Alongside the shock tactics, we were treated to a career-spanning medley from Justin Timberlake which included a squeal-worthy reunion of *NSync - yes, it actually happened! So in case you missed any of the action, don't bother watching the whole ceremony because we've rounded up the best bits thanks to the plethora of videos, GIFs and memes that have popped up in the last 24 hours. Enjoy!

1. Lady Gaga opened the show wearing a white nun’s habit. No less than 4 costume changes later, she was back in her seat wearing a clam-shell bra and teeny thong. We wouldn't expect anything less.

2. Miley showed how to ditch your Disney roots once and for all. How? By twerking with giant teddy bears and doing a lot of tongue wagging. The singer took to the stage for a rendition of 'We Can’t Stop' before launching into a, err, suggestive performance of 'Blurred Lines', gyrating against Robin Thicke as well as a ginrormous sponge whilst wearing a nude bikini. Unsurprisingly, it garnered more than a few quizzically raised eyebrows, but one's thing for sure: Miley certainly knows how to steal the show.

3. The Smiths reacted hilariously. As Miley and Gagaloo pranced about in their pants, the camera cut to Will Smith. The actor had brought his two childen - Jaden, 15 and Willow, 12 - to the event and the family's are-you-seriously-doing-that expressions say it all. Yes, all that pelvis thrusting is troubling us too, Jaden.

4. Did Taylor Swift just drop the F bomb? As One Direction - including her ex Harry Styles - took to the stage, Taylor was caught on camera mouthing what looked like, 'Shut the f***up'. Miaow! Admittedly, it may have been in reaction to the boos that the band received but when the star accepted the gong for Best Female Video for her song 'I Knew You Were Trouble', she couldn't resist a little dig. 'I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these,' she said, triumphantly holding up her moonman. You tell him, Swifty!

5. Rihanna spilt her popcorn and brilliantly tried to hide it. She may have left the raunchy outfits to her fellow pop performers and ditched the wacktacular outfits for a simple tee and jeans combo, but that didn't mean the whole affair was devoid of Ri-Ri's cheeky antics as the video below proves. Oh, Rihanna, never change.

6. TLC reunited! Then *NSync appeared and everyone forgot.

7. Yes, it's the moment we'd all been waiting for. Justin Timberlake accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award - the MTV equivalent of a lifetime achievement gong - and gave a mesmirising performance in celebration. But he didn't do it alone! Step forward all four of his former bandmates who joined him onstage to sing a rendition of 'Girlfriend' and 'Bye Bye Bye.' 'Half of the moonmen I’ve ever won, I won with those four guys right there,' said Mr JT. 'So above all else, I’m going to share this — we can keep it my house — but I’m going to share this award with them.' *wipes nostalgic tear from eye*

8. Taylor Swift summed up our overall excitement when she went all fan girl on us and did this:

9. Katy Perry had a fight. Kind of. K-Pez closed the show by performing her new song 'Roar' in a boxing match under the Brooklyn Bridge, proving that you don't need a zillion costumes changes or racy dancing to made an impact. Bravo!
