To Prepare You For The Hobbit Film Premiere Tonight, Here Are 8 Things You Need To Know

12 December 2012 by

Tonight is the ROYAL premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and we're mega excited. The director has pioneered a new technology, some sort of jazzy 3D effect which sees the movie filmed at 48 frames per second. No, we don’t know what that means either but we’ve had a sneak preview of the film and visually, it looks ace. Being royal and all, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William is due to attend while his pregnant wife, Kate Middleton, is tucked up at home with a severe case of morning sickness. If you’ve got plans to see the film when it hits cinemas this Friday 14th December, here are ten facts about Hobbits to whet your appetite…

1. Hobbits have really nice writing...

Seriously, they must have taken calligraphy classes at school. We don’t know what font inspired the text in Bilbo’s memoirs to Frodo but we want it. In fact, we don’t think we can possibly send any Christmas cards without it.

2. Hobbits are hungry...

Hobbits are hungry creatures. Like us, they’re big fans of the second breakfast and are mostly thinking about their next meal. Note to self: keeping a larder stocked full of yummy food will backfire spectacularly when 13 hungry dwarves descend on you unannounced, hoping to be fed.

3. Hobbits hitch a ride...

Being fairly short creatures, Hobbits are partial to hitching a ride to help them on their way. Not a fan of horses (which must seem like dinosaurs to them), they have been known to use Gandalf’s preferred method of travel, the eagle.

4. Hobbits love home comforts...

We’ve already covered food, but a nice warm fire and big old armchair also rank highly in the list of places they’d rather be instead of a perilous journey being chased by orcs.

5. Hobbits love riddles...

Who doesn’t love games? Hobbits love riddles. Fact. Bilbo actually acquires the dreaded ring (you know the one we mean, lord of etc) from Gollum (also a Hobbit) through a game of riddles.

6. Hobbits' can go crazy...

When Hobbitses (Gollum’s plural, not ours) are driven mad by an evil, possessed piece of bling, they start referring to themselves and said bling as ‘we’. They also fashion undergarments from the skin of goblins. Oh, and they’re still hungry. As in, ‘we’d like a snack, can we eat’ you hungry.

7. Hobbits have nice friends...

Case in point, Gandalf. He shows up at parties and brings loads of really cool fireworks. But then when you’re not looking, he burns a secret sign on your door and gets you involved in all sorts of adventures when really you’d rather be sitting at home in your nice armchair in front of your nice warm fire. (See 4, above). He is also quite good at getting people out of sticky situations, even if he did get them in to them in the first place.

8. Hobbits like waistcoats...

It’s pretty unlikely you’ll be seeing a Hobbit's style guide gracing the pages of Grazia any time soon, they're rarely seen in anything but grubby waistcoats and half-buttoned shirts. Elves, meanwhile, look ace. Long sleek hair, beautiful tiaras and flowing gowns. Now that’s a look we can get on board with.
