Can you really get under a person’s skin with just a few well-chosen questions? We find out with Amanda Abbington, who plays Mary Morstan in BBC's adaptation of Sherlock...
1. Who are you closest to?
I have two people, my mum and my partner Martin [Freeman]. They’re the two people that I confide in, I love them to bits. I also have my three ‘dead body friends’ – the three people you’d tell if you ever murdered anyone, and they’d never breathe a word of it.
2. What’s your biggest fear?
Dying without seeing my children grow up.
3. What is relaxation to you?
Watching a really good film with Martin, or a series like House of Cards with loads of popcorn and a cup of tea. It’s lovely.
4. What are you best at?
I suppose being kind. I’m quite a good listener and I’m good at looking after people. I like being a mother. I’ve always wanted to make sure people are OK, ever since I was a little girl.
5. What do you value in a partner?
Honesty, trust and a really good sense of humour, because that gets you through the best times and the worst times.

6. Tell us something that will shock us?
I sometimes don’t wash my hair for two weeks. That’s pretty disgusting. It’s short, so sometimes it’s easier to just wet it.
7. When was the last time you felt happy?
This afternoon when I picked my children up from school. I hadn’t seen them all day and they can out beaming and smiling and showing me the things that they had made.
8. What’s the one thing you’d change about your life if you could?
I’d like to be 21 again. I’d like to do it all over again, and not make some of the same mistakes. I probably wouldn’t go out with some of the boys I went out with. And I probably would’ve handled my career slightly more seriously than I did. I’d like to be young for a little bit.
9. What’s the one item you can’t live without?
My handbag, is that a stupid thing to say? I have so much stuff in my handbag. Everyone who picks it up says it’s far too heavy for my back. I’ve got it with me now and the zip doesn’t close. It’s full of an inordinate amount of crap.
10. What’s the most expensive item in your wardrobe?
A Belstaff coat which was £1000, but I got it for £500 in the sale. It was an amazing choice, I haven’t worn it yet, but every now and then I open the bag and look at it.
