EXCLUSIVE: Cover Drive Premiere New Lyric Video & Talk Rihanna, Style And New Album

In a bit of a work slump right now? Welcome to #PlayTime, Grazia Daily's new music feature bringing you a different hot track every day of the week. From just-dropped music premieres to cool covers and throwback classics, it's the new soundtrack to your afternoon...

Four piece band Cover Drive, fronted by the gorgeous Amanda, are hot on the heels of Rihanna to become one of the biggest Bajan musical exports. And RiRi knows it, too. She picked up the Global Talent signees as support on her 'Loud' Tour - their first ever show, and what proved to be their big break. Since, Cover Drive have enjoyed massive success, charting in the UK top 10 numerous times as well landing a spot on none other than President Obama's inaugral playlist. Currently working on their follow-up second studio album, the group premiere the lyric video for the first single off the album 'Love Junkie' exclusively with Grazia Daily.

We caught up with Cover Drive's lead singer Amanda to talk touring with Rihanna, style and their forthcoming new album.

Tell us a bit about you for those who don’t know…

We are four friends from Barbados who started a band four years ago in our drummer's basement based on a suggestion made by his mother! Since then we’ve been on a crazy journey opening for Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson, topping the UK charts and landing a spot on President Obama's inaugural playlist.

Supporting Rihanna on tour must have been awesome! What was your highlight?

That was an incredible opportunity that sort flew into our lap. It was the first show we had ever played and at the time we were a super-green, baby band so we had crazy nerves! Especially since there was a 25,000 strong Rihanna Navy waiting on the other side! It was an unforgettable high that got us addicted to what we do; that energy and connection between artist and audience is what got us hooked and that night set a lot of things in motion for us.  Simply opening for Rihanna is a highlight in itself but meeting her and listening to her express her support for us was major.

Did you pick anything up in particular from watching Rihanna perform?

We were blown away by her confidence. She really knows who she is and it shows in her art. That really inspired us to stay true to our vision for Cover Drive and to be unapologetic about it.

You’ve had a lot of success in the UK charting in the top 10 several times – what do you think it is about you and your sound that’s proving so popular?

People respond well to authenticity. The music we make is 100% true to who we are. We always incorporate our Caribbean roots into our music and we're all about making people feel good; I think that combination goes a long way.

What’s it like being the only girl in a band with three guys?

Being the only girl means that I'm the target for almost all of the pranks, jokes and teasing. I grew up around girls so my skin has definitely gotten a lot thicker being around boys. They’re my best friends; I know that underneath all the teasing they really love me and they have my back always.

How would you describe your style? Does it differ on the day to day to how you dress when performing?

I describe my style as Sexy Tomboy Chic. I love feeling like one of the boys but I'm a Caribbean girl at the end of the day and I like showing skin. On stage I like to feel strong and in charge and wearing trousers or catsuits helps to give me that feeling. You'll hardly ever see me wear a dress on stage, it wouldn't be practical with the amount of moving I do. Off stage I allow myself to be a little more girly in my style but I don't stray too far.

Which are your favourite labels at the moment?

I'm loving the Balmain Collection, Asish and BCBG Max Azria.

What’s next?

We're currently doing a US college tour which has been an amazing experience and we're working on our second album. 'Love Junkie' is the first single from the album and we're really excited to finally get it out there!

'Love Junkie' is set for release July 29.
