“My Life On Record." X Factor Host Dermot O'Leary Reveals His Favourite Songs

Dermot O'Leary

Every Wednesday afternoon we ask our favourite celebrities to tell us the songs that make up the soundtrack to their lives, from their first breakup track to their future wedding song. This week, X Factor host and Radio 2 DJ Dermot O'Leary...

The first album I ever bought...
"This is hilarious. I saved up all my paper-round money and bought The Heat is On from the local garage - I paid for it in coppers!  It had every power ballad going on it, lots of American Rock n Roll."

The first song I was obsessed with...
"My friend Neil worked in WHSmith, in the record department. I really badgered him for Bourgeois Tagg. I was completely blown away by it."

My first break-up song...
"Meeting Across The River by Bruce Springsteen. It's not really a break-up song, but it was just really apt at the time and used to make me feel sad. Still one of my favourite songs "

The song that sums up my teenage years...
"Definitely Crockett's Theme from Miami Vice. It was such a big TV show at the time, it became the song of the moment - it even inspired all the fashion we were wearing. Including espadrills! Also Paul Hardcastle's 19 would be another one, as well as anything by the Smiths or Housemartins, in later teenage life."

The song I wish I could play...
"Tiny Dancer by Elton John. It's a stunning piano-based piece. I'd gather my friends round the piano while I played for them."

The Dermot O’Leary Show is on BBC Radio 2, Saturdays at 3pm.

The X Factor is on ITV1 on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
