The X Factor vs Strictly Come Dancing: The Saturday Night TV Show-Down

We’re not going to lie, we’re finding it pretty difficult to tear ourselves away from the tv at the moment. As the evenings get darker and the weather gets colder and wetter, there’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa and feasting on the high-octane entertainment of The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. We’re spoilt for choice and our nearly full Sky + box agrees so, let’s compare the two and see how they fared…

The Viewers

Strictly held court on Saturday night with an average of 9.9 million viewers tuning in to see celebrities including Victoria Pendleton and Denise Van Outen dancing in the Hollywood themed special. The X Factor meanwhile averaged 8.6 million viewers who saw the remaining acts compete with their take on a club classic.

The Fashion

It’s a given that the biggest fash battle on tv is between The X Factor judges themselves, Nicole Scherzinger and Tulisa who each wore an eye-poppingly bright colour for the club classics themed evening on Saturday. Nicole wore a hot pink mini-dress with flared sleeves while Tulisa jazzed up her sleek black pencil skirt with a green and black lace corset top. Meanwhile, SCD host Tess Daly certainly paid attention to the Hollywood theme this week and looked both classy and elegant in a glitzy, uber sparkly floor-length silver gown.

The Drama

You would expect there to be a lot of drama on Strictly this week what with the theme being Hollywood and all but we’re still finding it a little tricky to pick our favourite when there’s so much talent to choose from. Kimberley Walsh looked incredible in the wake of her Girls Aloud reunion press conference the day before and Victoria Pendleton managed to escape relatively unscathed after a brief knicker flash caused by Brendan Cole as he attempted to disentangle her dress which was caught in her shoe. The highlight of the night was Louis Smith as he recreated the infamous lift from Dirty Dancing with his dance partner Flavia Cacace.

But there’s no denying that The X Factor had its fair share of drama this week. James Arthur was nearly rushed to hospital after suffering from a panic attack after last weeks results show. Lucy Spraggan alongside ‘marmite’ contestant Rylan has been booted out of The X Factor hotel for misbehaving and Jahmene had a very difficult week after revelations about his abusive father came to light in the press. Not to mention poor Jade, the first of this years contestants to be rushed to a vocal coach after she was struggling with swollen vocal chords. The departure of MK1 on Sunday night was a bit of a shock to some – we’re not sure how Tulisa is going to cope without an urban act in the competition while Strictly said goodbye to Jerry Hall who definitely does not have moves like Jagger.
