We LOVED Sex and the City: The Movie. We’ve all had our hearts broken but never quite so dramatically or quite so stylishly as Carrie. It’s hard to believe that we’ve never run down the street sobbing in a Vivienne Westwood gown with a bird stuck to our head but it’s true. And though we welcomed the fab foursome back to the big screen with open arms, we didn’t quite love Sex and the City 2 if we’re really honest.
It’s fair to say we’re in two camps when it comes to the much discussed possibility of Sex and the City 3 and it looks like we’re not the only ones. When asked about revisiting her role as Miranda, Cynthia Nixon told The Hollywood Reporter, ‘No, no. I think we had a wonderful ride. I think it's fine to let it go.’
Kim Catrall has been equally blasé but not opposed to the idea entirely. Kristin ‘Charlotte’ Davis last year said she’s hopeful that there’s another story to tell while lead actress and producer Sarah Jessica Parker has been vocal about her hopes to revisit the franchise for a third time. Speaking to Parade she said, ‘I know what the story is. It’s a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is, what’s the right time to tell it?’
Er, no SJP, the question is WHAT IS THE STORY? Some musings, if you will…
At the end of the second movie, all of the girls bar Samantha had hop, skipped and jumped down the aisle with the very men they finished the television series with. Ever the eternal bachelorette, might we see Sam say ‘I do’?
They tried very carefully to hide the fact that SJP was preggers in real life during season five with some puffy dresses, a couple of giant IT bags and by cutting the series length in half. But would a third film see Carrie follow in the maternal footsteps of Miranda and Charlotte with a baby of her very own?
We’re not talking about the metaphorical death of the franchise here. We’re talking killing off a cast member. Could four become three? No-one said anything about a happy ever after…
