Forty three films, four Oscars and 11 Baftas… Yep, Woody Allen is one of the most successful directors of all time. But they say behind every good man is a great woman and behind Woody - there are dozens.

To celebrate Friday’s release of his new film, To Rome With Love, starring Ellen Page, Allison Pill and Greta Gerwig, we take a look at other great actresses that have worked with Woody.

Diane Keaton

His famous leading lady, without a doubt, was Diane Keaton. The actress starred in six of his films, including Manhattan and Annie Hall - and had a year-long relationship with him.

‘Oh my God, I had an instant crush on him,’ Keaton admits of their affair. ‘I really worked trying to get him to fall in love with me. He didn't quite fall in love with me but I was around a lot.’

Scarlett Johannson

Scarlett, who has starred in Vicky Christina Barcelona and Match Point, says working with Woody was the moment she knew she’d ‘made it’.

Penelope Cruz

Scarlett’s fellow Vicky Christina Barcelona star Penelope, who also stars in To Rome With Love, gushed: ‘He loves women.  He has written some of the best female characters of all time.’

Mia Farrow

Mia never married Woody but they did have a 10 year relationship and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy in 1982 was the first of 13 of his films she appeared in.

To Rome With Love is released nationwide on Friday
