Alicia Vikander in Gucci
The stars of Joe Wright’s adaptation of Anna Karenina hit the red carpet in London’s Leicester Square last night for the world premiere and in keeping with the late-19th century opulence of the film’s setting, it certainly was a decadent affair. Cruising under the chandeliers in Chanel was the film’s heroine played by Keira Knightley who stepped out in an embellished floral frock from the Chanel Fall 2012 couture collection. Swedish beauty Alicia Vikander, who plays Kitty in the film, made sure she turned a few heads in her emerald green velvet Gucci gown from the Fall 2012 collection. We grabbed a couple of minutes with the young starlet…
Was it an easy decision choosing what to wear tonight?
It must have been because I tried on so many dresses and I wanted to pick the right one. Then I saw this teeny, tiny photo and I was like, ‘oh, there it is’.
What do you prefer – getting dressed up for the red carpet or the amazing costumes you had to wear in the film?
It’s kind of the same thing. I love dressing up in nice clothes but [on the red carpet] you’re always taking it that bit further. It’s like putting yourself into an act.
Were there any costume mishaps on set?
I was kind of trained for this as I’d just finished filming another costume drama. I actually fainted in those corsets and I had never fainted in my life before – it was so scary! But I guess I knew what I could and couldn’t do in this film.
Keira has talked about how difficult she found learning to dance for the movie. How was it for you?
I went to the Royal Swedish Ballet School for 10 years. When I quit, I just stepped out of the studio and didn’t get back in to it so it was the first time I had been back to it and it was great.
Why did you decide to become an actress instead of a ballerina?
My Mum’s an actress and I grew up in that world but when you train in ballet it’s quite intense and that was my path for so many years. Then the Swedish director Tomas Alfredson who made Tinker Tailor Solider Spy did something for television and I ran out to a casting and I didn’t tell my school or anything. I didn’t go back for two months and I thought they were going to cut me off. I guess then I planted the seed.
After seeing her performance in the film, we definitely think she’s made the right decision! In fact, we’ll be keeping our eye on this one. Dancing, acting AND she knows how to rock the red carpet. Win.
