Writer, director and feminist Nora Ephron, who died this year, was a Hollywood pioneer. In her honour, our next Grazia Film Club, in collaboration with Chanel Chance, shows her most loved film: When Harry Met Sally. How about seeing it on a West London rooftop? Chanel is offering Grazia subscribers (plus a friend) the chance to see the film on 28 August at the Kensington Roof Gardens; you’ll enjoy champagne while they conjure up a delicious barbecue before the screening. Each guest will leave with a stylish pouch packed with samples of your beauty essentials compliments of Chance, the must-have summer fragrance from Chanel. You will also receive an invitation for a complimentary nail shape and paint (with a Le Vernis polish to keep) at Chanel’s pop-up beauty boutique in Covent Garden.
In anticipation, writer Jesse Ellison remembers the legend that was Nora Ephron.
‘Three years ago, two colleagues and I interviewed Nora Ephron for Newsweek. It was a piece about women at work – in particular, at Newsweek itself. Nora was hired as a “mail girl” in the 1960s and told, as all aspiring female writers were at that time, that she would never write for the magazine.
‘When we arrived at her Manhattan Upper East Side apartment, she offered tea and cookies; we didn’t know that she had already been diagnosed with the leukaemia that would kill her. We talked work and sexual politics – her razor-sharp wit didn’t disappoint. When we complained about lecherous editors, she spoke with the frankness you’d expect from a woman who wrote that infamous scene from When Harry Met Sally, where a woman fakes an orgasm in a New York City deli. She told us to stop feeling sorry for ourselves – that, yes, sexism is real, but victimisation is a choice.
‘It’s a message that runs through all of Nora’s films, from Sleepless In Seattle to You’ve Got Mail. She invented the modern romantic heroine: quick, funny, warm and wise, just like her.’
