Styled to Rock's Executive Producer, Rihanna
Who doesn’t love Rihanna? The peerless run of immaculate pop singles, the f***-you Twitter feed, the fashion ferocity and now Styled to Rock, her ace endeavour into reality talent TV which started last night.
Twelve fashion hopefuls collated around tulles in east London and were tasked with creating an outfit for a pop star. It’s Project Runway with purpose. The cast list of weekly guests is stunning - Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry, Scissor Sisters - who get the power of presentation and execute it expertly. Even a slightly below A-list turn like Rizzle Kicks somehow make sense.
Crucially, Styled to Rock seems to have an actual understanding of fashion. As Executive Producer, even though she’s not starring in the show every week, you can feel Ri-Ri’s presence. She has genuine fashion intuition and is amazingly sweet on TV when she does make an appearance such as in this week’s opening episode, where the 12 hopefuls are charged with designing stage-wear for one of her ‘very good friends,’ Kanye West. She’s accurate, cute with the design kids and respectful of weekly judges Henry Holland, Nicola Roberts and her own stylist, Lysa Cooper.
Styled to Rock is the fashion TV show we’ve been waiting for: underpinning the melodrama and camp with some specific, well-heeled knowledge. Tonight, Ms Cooper assesses the work of one young hopeful: ‘This is how you style,’ she instructs, undoing the clumsy turn-ups on a trouser and adding a beanie hat at a left angle. It’s the show that could yet become a fashion masterclass. A-stars for everyone.
