The new trailer for Great Expectations hit the web today and it looks ace. The script is written by David Nicholls, author behind the incredible best-selling novel and blockbuster last year, One Day and it’s directed by Mike Newell, famed for Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Mona Lisa Smile.
The film stars Helena Bonham Carter as a dishevelled and eccentric Miss Havisham. The press shots of her are amazing. She’s all cobwebs and dust and papery skin hidden behind a dirty veil and swamped in a raggedy dress. Elsewhere, the film stars Ralph Fiennes as Pip’s criminal benefactor Magwitch, Holliday Grainger as Estella and a delicious-looking Jeremy Irvine as Pip himself. He first caught our eye in War Horse but now what with this film and the upcoming Now Is Good alongside Dakota Fanning, he’s most definitely reached heart-throb status.
You may remember the last screen-side adaption of Great Expectations at Christmas when Douglas Booth and Vanessa Kirby too the young lovers roles in the BBC version. Prior to that there was 1998’s contemporary version starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke. This latest trailer looks darker than the Beeb’s version, and the love affair between Pip and Estella looks like it might be more passionate than we’ve seen before too. We can’t wait to see how the chemistry between Holliday and Jeremy pans out!
