If, like us you squealed with delight when the trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby was released earlier this year then we’ve got some bad news. Warner Bros have just announced that the film, which boasts an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, will now not be released until summer 2013. Boo!
Luhrmann’s interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1920’s novel was set for release on Christmas Day in the US and Boxing Day in the UK, but now fans will have to wait a whole year to find out if the 3D extravaganza lives up to expectations. It also means the film will be out of contention for next year’s Oscars – Luhrmann was previously nominated for his musical masterpiece Moulin Rouge.
The filmmakers are pushing back the release date to ensure it ‘reaches the largest audience possible’ as they weren’t keen on it going up again some of this winter’s other highly anticipated movies including Les Miserables starring Anne Hathaway the first instalment of The Hobbit trilogy.
It will now be in competition with next year’s summer Blockbusters including Iron Man 3, Star Trek 2 and the new Superman film Man of Steel which sees The Tudors star Henry Cavill take on the dual role of Clark Kent and his superhero alter ego.
As much as we’re gutted and not entirely sure if we can physically wait that long to see what promises to be a visually stunning slice of American life, we do think that the story, set in a New England summer of the Roaring Twenties lends itself to the warmer months. Plus now we’ve got 12 whole months to perfect our flapper look!
