The legacy of Marilyn Monroe

This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the death of iconic screen siren, Marilyn Monroe. Still one of the most talked about women in the world (and one of the most imitated), her beauty trademarks – red lips, platinum blonde hair – are synonymous with allure and sexuality. From the actresses who’ve played her on screen to the models that’ve posed like her in print, take a look at our gallery of Modern-Day Marilyns and tell us which of them you think captures Norma Jean’s sparkle...

Find out how to get Marilyn Monroe's iconic makeup look with these tips from blogger Tanya Burr.

The music video for Madge's 1985 hit 'Material Girl' was inspired by Monroe's performance of the song 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' from the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Nicole Kidman

In 2008 the Aussie star pulled her best sex-kitten pose made up like Marilyn for the cover of Australian Harper's Bazaar.

Gwen Stefani

If Marilyn wore a bindi and listened to ska then which modern star would she be? Gwen Stefani of course! One glance at the singer's platinum locks and flawless complexion and you know she's an MM fan: “Growing up in LA, I was fascinated with starlets. My room was covered with Marilyn Monroe posters and I loved early Hollywood. It's such a glamorous era.”

Mariah Carey

She owns the Hollywood icon's piano, has a penchant for figure hugging gowns and named her daughter Monroe. Mariah is Marilyn OBSESSED.

Kate Moss

A blonde icon in her own right, supermodel Kate Moss posed as a bare faced Marilyn on the cover of New York Magazine back in 2009. A small tattoo brought the shot back to rock n' roll Moss world.

Christina Aguilera

Not one of Christina's more classy homages to the screen legend, but the singer often gives a nod to ‘50s Hollywood with floor-length dresses, blond curls and red accents.

Paris Hilton

Anyone who's ever seen a picture of Paris partying at the Playboy Mansion will know that the bleach blonde heiress loves a costume. For the launch of her tenth perfume (yes, TENTH) Miss Hilton arrived dressed as her 'fashion icon' Marilyn. We're not that convinced, but at least this one of her more respectable get-ups.

Scarlett Johansson

Rumours that sex symbol Scarlett Johansson might one day step into the role of Marilyn have been flying around for years. Although she didn't end up playing the actress in the film 'My Week With Marilyn', she has successfully channelled MM's pin-up allure in campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana.

Christina Hendricks

The ludicrously curvaceous Mad Men actress has never posed as or played MM (to our knowledge), but whether she's on screen in the role of Joan the secretary or on the red carpet there's no denying Christina’s pin-up status. This lady oozes the style and elegance of an old school Hollywood starlet. We think Marilyn wood agree!

Michelle Williams

The former Dawson's Creek actress won a Golden Globe for her role as MM in the 2011 British drama My Week With Marilyn. She brilliantly captured the star's insecurities and emotions while filming The Prince and the Showgirl alongside Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in 1957.

Lady Gaga

The singer paid tribute to MM on what would have been her 86th birthday by posing with curled hair and red lippy for her Twitter followers. She tweeted: '#HappyBirthday Marilyn They'll never take our blonde hair and lipstick.' (Via @ladygaga)

Lindsay Lohan

In 2008 Lindsay Lohan posed for photographer Bert Stern for the cover of New York magazine. Together they recreated the photoshoot MM did with Stern in 1962 dubbed 'The Last Sitting', six weeks before the star’s death. Lohan has also since shot a provocative spread for Playboy inspired by a nude pictorial of Marilyn.

Blake Lively

We do love a TV dream sequence. Gossip Girl got it spot on when [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/07/27/blonde-ambition--blake-lively-confesses-to-chanelling-marilyn-monroe-on-the-red-.htm">Blake Lively transformed into MM[/a] to recreate 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' for the shows 100th episode.

Lana Del Rey

Singer Del Rey took on the [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/06/28/lana-del-rey-channels-marilyn-monroe-and-jackie-o-in-new-video.htm">two opposing roles of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O[/a]in the video for her single 'National Anthem'. Her breathy vocals were spot on for mimicking the icon's famous 'Happy Birthday' performance.
