She’s never been one to shy away from controversy. From covering herself in prime raw steak at the MTV awards to being carried along the red carpet at the Grammys in a giant egg, Lady Gaga is one of the most bonkers pop stars on the planet – and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Even so, we’re wondering how her latest move is going to play out. At a gig in Melbourne this week, Gaga premiered a new song called Princess Die, believed to be inspired by, um, Princess Di. The song includes the lines: ‘Princess Die, I wanna see you cry, and wish that I would go, in my rich boyfriend’s limo,’ as well as ‘Right after he proposed with a 16-carat stone wrapped in rose gold, with the paparazzi swarming around.’ Hmmm…a princess with a rich boyfriend, a new engagement ring and a swarming pack of paparazzi…it’s not hard to see the comparisons.
Gaga herself hasn’t confirmed who the song is about, but introduced it by saying: ‘This song is a little sad. But it’s about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I’ve ever had. It’s called ‘Princess Die,’ D-I-E.’ The singer has previously admitted being inspired by the late Princess, once saying: ‘Diana was the most iconic martyr of fame. She died because of it.’
It’s not just the song’s royal references causing a stir – but it’s lyrics about suicide, too, including: ‘I wish that I could cope, but I took pills and left a note.’
So, is she one of the few stars willing to take risks – or courting controversy for the sake of it (after all, you can’t name a song
