Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina

Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina

Passionate period drama, steamy bedroom scenes and one hell of a 19th century wardrobe, we’ve finally caught a glimpse of Keira Knightley’s new film Anna Karenina. And it deserves all the hype it’s going to get.

The blockbuster is released in cinemas on 7 September and you can catch the full trailer below. It’s based on the Russian novel by Leo Tolstoy, is an epic tale of passion, betrayal, aristocracy and revolution.

In the trailer, we see Keira as Anna, an aristocrat in late 19th century Russia unhappily married to Alexei Karenin, played by a bushy-bearded Jude Law. She embarks on an affair with debonair Count Vronsky (Aaron Johnson), who offers her everything she doesn’t get with Alexei. But, in true dramatic fashion, her betrayal comes with serious consequences…

It’s been a busy period for Keira, what with starring with Michael Fassbender in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method earlier this year and, of course, getting engaged to Klaxons rocker James Righton. This is one role we couldn’t be more excited about though. It’s directed by Joe Wright, who directed Keira in Pride and Prejudice in 2005 and Antonement in 2007 and boasts an all-star cast of British talent, including Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Michelle Dockery, Emily Watson and Holliday Grainger.

And did we mention the Oscar-worthy wardrobe? Corsets, petticoats and stunning gowns have all been created by Jacqueline Durran, the costume designer for Pride and Prejudice and Antonement. Keira rocks some stunning jewellery too; think pearl necklaces, diamond rings and beautiful broaches.

This film will be well worth the wait.
