At first glance what were your first impressions of this cover? Ooh, she’s pretty, if a little bit risqué… or did you correctly identify it’s in fact a male model. Yes, look closer – that’s no topless lady - but catwalk favourite Andrej Pejic, rocking the androgynous look.
Which is why we’re a little confused by the backlash to this cover. Borders and Barnes & Noble have, apparently, asked for the latest issue of fashion magazine ‘Dossier Journal’ to be placed in opaque polybags.
Censorship gone mad? Or do they really not see this is a MAN!
Granted, Pejic’s razor shark cheekbones, Natalia Vodianova-inspired eyebrows and sultry pout do give him a feminine appearance… but, come on, his chest is unmistakably boyish.
Yet the cover has been criticised for being too risqué.
According to the Huffington Post, Dossier Journal received an email which read, ‘We have a problem with the new issue in the US chain stores. The chains require that the issue be placed in an opaque polybags’. Although they haven’t admitted which retail outlet the complaint came from.
Earlier this year outrage ensued when Elton John was censored by a US supermarket, when he posed with partner David Furnish and new baby son Zachery. The magazine cover was censored by a ‘family shield’ and deemed inappropriate for children.
What next – fashion mags relegated to the top shelf?
Come on, Andrej Pejic’s cover is hardly pornographic. He’s a world famous model with top fashion credentials and Dossier Journal’s cover is arty.
Or is it too nude for the newsstand?
