This is the conversation we have to imagine went on in the American Apparel boardroom -
‘People are complaining our ads have too much nudity. We need to PG our next campaign.’
‘How about ditching the photos for some artful illustrations?’
‘Perfect… but we’ll keep the tits and arse won’t we?’
‘Oh, of course.’
So that’s exactly what the brains behind the brand did. And as you’ll see from this new batch of American Apparel posters, this current campaign isn’t prudish.
We assume it was a cost cutting rather then morality boosting strategy, because there’s even more intimate detail in these graphic drawings then their infamously scantily clad photo shoots.
Only time will tell if they’re a hit with customers. The label – constantly dogged by bankruptcy rumours – certainly needs to draw in the punters. But is this the right way to do it?
