Cheryl Cole: has the backlash begun?

22 November 2010

Hands up if you hid behind a cushion when Cheryl Cole confronted Wagner on The X Factor this weekend. Yep, us too.

In case you missed the drama of Saturday night’s show, here's what went down. Rather than commenting on his (predictably horrendous) performance, Cheryl accused Wagner of telling a newspaper she’s ‘just a council estate girl who got lucky’. Yikes.

But her attempt to defend herself backfired when the wacky Brazilian responded by pleading ‘please don’t believe what the Press say’ and admitting that he ‘didn’t know the guy was a journalist’. ‘You’re a role model for the young people of this nation,’ he continued. ‘Because you’re incredibly talented, beautiful and have the manners of a princess, you are now the most famous woman in the country.’

Within seconds, enraged viewers were up in arms, taking to Twitter to criticise Cheryl’s ‘petty’ and ‘unprofessional’ attack. So this morning Grazia HQ is abuzz with one question: is the bubble about to burst for our Cheryl?

Let's rewind to earlier this year when Cheryl divorced her cheating hubby, battled malaria and became a chart-topping solo artist. At this point, the Geordie princess could do no wrong. But has this series of The X Factor dislodged her Nation's Sweetheart crown?

The backlash began with Gamu-gate when Chezza axed the Zimbabwean in favour of Katie and Cher. Then, in a dramatic sing-off, she made the most controversial decision in X Factor history by refusing to vote out one of her acts. Adding to the frenzy, Louis Walsh criticised her for getting too big for her boots and in the style showdown, she's far from wowed us. All this has added up to make her about as popular with the viewing public as she was with toilet attendants circa 2003.

So we want to know YOUR thoughts on Saturday night’s outburst. Is Cheryl a bully for calling up Wagner on national TV, especially since she herself has bemoaned tabloid manipulation in the past? Or do you salute the Geordie judge for so publicly sticking up for her roots? And – question of all questions – is this the beginning of the end for our beloved Cheryl Cole? Let's thrash it out in the comments box below…
