Look at (or rather, listen to) this! We all know the gorgeous Carey Mulligan to be a v talented actress, as backed up by numerous awards and plaudits. BUT NOW! She is crooning as well. Yep, on the very excellent and listenable Belle and Sebastian album Carey joins in on vocal duties on the track 6, Write About Love. What do you think of Carey’s dulcet tones? We must admit, we think it is a good foil to the Scottish indie kids’ ‘60’s-inspired jingle jangle.
How does she compare to our other favourite musical actresses?
1 Scarlett Johansson – here she is, singing Yesterday Is Here, from her album of Tom Waits covers. Do you like Scarlett’s rasping voice, rattling through the cover? We do.
2 Zooey Deschanel singing Hello Dolly in a beguiling jazz style, under the twinkling lights of a bridge in NY, we guess. Do you love her retro stylings or should she carry on making indie flicks and leave the double bass action to Amy Winehouse?
3 The ultimate singing thesp – Juliette Lewis! Like a female Iggy Pop with better skin, she stomps and skips all over the competition. The main problem with actors moonlighting as singers is that they concentrate on getting the notes right rather than throwing themselves into the performance. No such inhibitions trouble Juliette – she growls her way through her sets like a escaped tiger! The winner? You tell us!
