Is The Age Of Classic Hollywood Beauty Over?

12 October 2010

The envy of women the world over, they make millions from their traffic-stopping looks, trading on their desirability and sex-appeal as hot commodities. But today’s Hollywood actresses have been given a darn good dressing down by none other than the queen of old-school glamour, Joan Collins.

The outspoken screen siren has launched a scathing attack on modern big-screen actresses, claiming that the public is being ‘starved of beautiful people’ and that the age of classic Hollywood beauty is over.

‘I have to say, there aren’t that many good looking actresses around today,’ she says. ‘I mean, there’s Angelina Jolie and there’s... Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston is cute, but I wouldn’t call her beautiful.’ Ouch, poor Jen!

She also suggests that Cheryl Cole owes her nation’s sweetheart status wholly to her looks. ‘I think that is why Cheryl Cole is so popular, because she is just so pretty and the public are starved of gorgeous people.’
The actress says that in her day, stars like Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner made more effort with their appearance and looked far more glamorous and stylish than the modern crop of actresses. She said recently: ‘Perhaps actresses of today, in their desire to be “taken seriously”, feel that being groomed and well put together detracts from their ability.’ Well in that case, forget about going for the Oscar, Ange, just make sure your hair's been done and you've slapped the lippy on!

Do you agree with Joan that the age of Hollywood beauty is over? Do you think Angelina Jolie is the only truly beautiful actress out there? Is Jen indeed just cute and not beautiful? Let us know your thoughts on the matter.
