Is Mad Men a health hazard?

26 August 2010

The production team behind Mad Men are notorious for their attention to detail. Do you know they even Google the weather forecast archive of the date a scene is set, so they know whether the characters should be rugged up or in shades?
So we trust that they’re not overplaying the number of cigarettes the cast chuff away on. That’s how it was in the Sixties wasn’t it; when smoking was a-okay on planes, restaurants and in hospitals.

However, the show has been criticised for glamorising smoking. And now Desperate Housewife Kathryn Joosten (AKA Mrs. McClusky) – a proud lung cancer survivor – has spoken out saying fans of the show might be enticed to take up the habit.

‘I think they should at least have a disclaimer at the front of the show,’ said Kathryn, ‘Saying smoking is relevant to the time and place with the subject matter we're dealing with and it is not recommended because it causes cancer.’

And it’s not only we viewers she’s concerned about…

Mad Men producers should also provide annual chest x-rays 'for any member of the cast and crew who wants one,’ said Kathryn.

She’s doesn’t need to worry on Don Draper’s account. Jon Hamm previously revealed the prop cigarettes used in the show are herbal; ‘A blend of some kind of herbs and spices that burn and look like real cigarettes. But there's no nicotine or tar.’
Still when you watch this montage of every cig smoked in the series you can kinda see where she’s coming from…
