In the age of internet shopping we spend less time then ever crunched up in a fluro-lit changing room (thank god) – however that doesn’t mean we don’t try on-and return just as much!
Guess how many items of clothing an average woman tries on in her lifetime…? 21,000. That’s a lot of too-tight shirts stuck over heads!
This astonishing figure comes to us courtesy of Lambrini (which in itself raised squeals in Grazia headquarters – aahh the memories of our student days). We did then question how on earth they’d come up with this figure. We couldn’t tell you how many outfits we’ve tried on in the last month, let alone the last year…
The study of 3000 women found on average, we reportedly shop four times per month, trying on 10 items of clothing per trip, with five pieces going back on the rack.
That means we buy 240 garments a year, or 10,560 items over 45 years.
However they also found one in two women try on clothes with no intention of buying anything. Really? Would you subject yourself to the horrors of a coffin-like (or worse communal!!) changing room just to get the feel of the dress of your dreams?
‘For many women, trying on different clothes is often the best part of a shopping trip,’ said Lambrini's Sue Beck, ‘Hours are spent in changing rooms with friends trying on weird and wonderful outfits you wouldn't ever dare wear out in public. It's also an excuse for some of us to try on clothes that are designer and beyond our budget.’
But doesn’t that just make it worse: falling in love with a frock then having to bid it farewell? Or is cruising changing rooms part of the fun of window shopping? You tell us….
