If someone said you had a ‘maverick’ sense of style would you take it as a compliment? That’s how Carla Bruni described Samantha Cameron’s dress sense, following the French first lady’s trip to London this month.

The two politician’s wives had a fashion face-off. Carla in a salt-and-pepper dress by Dior and Sam, wearing her pregnancy well, in a black and white dress by Emilia Wickstead. Would you categorize her dress as ‘bohemian’? Carla clearly did…

‘The companion of the new UK head of government is a kind of fashion icon,’ Carla wrote on her website, ‘Aristocratic but bohemian, practitioner of yoga and close to the ecological cause, this mother of three has retained from her youth a dolphin tattoo.’

It is not the first time that Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy has commented on a British Prime Minister's wife. Last year she posted a caricature of Sarah Brown on her website, drawn by illustrator Alice Déchelette. And, if you remember it wasn’t too flattering, with buck teeth and straggly hair…

Do you think competitive dresser Carla was paying Sam Cam a compliment – or being catty? You tell us…
