One look at Ashley Graham whirling around in US retailer Lane Bryant’s lingerie ad confirms she’s gorgeous. Totally beautiful, without any plus-size caveats. But the fact she’s size 16 was a problem for American TV network ABC, who refused to show the ad during Dancing With The Stars, on account of being ‘too racy’.
Hello? Perhaps ABC hadn’t noticed that Dancing With The Stars features women wearing only a few strategically-placed sequins, making Ashley Graham look comparatively overdressed in her bra. Or perhaps the TV execs had a problem with Graham’s 38D cleavage. Is more flesh too sexy? Or are bigger women discriminated against for having a body shape that doesn’t conform to the classic idea of sexy?
‘I was very surprised,’ Graham told the New York Post. ‘The first thing I thought of was Victoria’s Secret commercials and how they’re just as racy, if not more racy, than Lane Bryant. [The models are] just a lot smaller than what I am. [ABC] can’t handle bigger on TV, bigger boobs on a normal-sized woman on TV.’
In response to consumer pressure the chiefs at ABC eventually agreed to play the ad during next week’s American Idol. It’s a sign society is changing. ‘Work has definitely been increasing and I do believe the plus-size industry is booming,’ Graham said in US magazine Madison Plus. ‘It is only natural considering the majority of women can relate to this body type. I am very confident that this movement will continue to grow and show women that every size is beautiful.’
What do you think? What size is sexiest?
