There’s nothing like a stumble to add some extra drama to an awards ceremony, and last night Karen Elson did the mother of all stumbles. As the beautiful flame-haired model went on in her spectacular Alexander McQueen red velvet gown to present The Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator to Grace Coddington, she fell off the stage and into the orchestra pit!
Our Style Director Paula Reed was there to witness the wipe-out and gave us this eye-witness account; “The stage was really short although it looked really deep to accommodate the holograms floating over it. Lauren Laverne told me the presenters had to stand at the back and could literally only see the autocue and the holograms. Karen just completely misjudged the width of the stage and stepped off it and fell into the pit. Everyone went silent – we were all in shock and so upset. But she insisted on coming back on because she wanted to present the award to Grace, and when she did everyone stood up and applauded.”
“I am the clumsiest person on this earth. I cannot believe I just did that,” she told the audience. “That is the worst fall I have ever had. I might have broken a rib, but I’m fine.” Glad to hear it, and when we spoke to her agency this morning, they confirmed for us; “Karen is absolutely fine and is on her way home now. She had to have a quick check-up at the hospital but is all okay”.
Aw what a star! She definitely takes our award for best and most endearing recovery of the evening, and we adore her even more for clearly having the same Grace obsession we do. Bravo!
