Talking Point: this decade's most shocking celebrity moments!

13 November 2009

Britney Spears

With 2009 almost drawing to a close (ok, it’s only November but we saw our first roast chestnut stall this morning. i.e. it’s practically Christmas) it’s time for our first end-of-decade round-up.

Who can deny, the noughties were the age of celebrity. Whether stalking F-listers (Jessica and Nick, Jordan and Peter) or breeding fresh talent (The X-Factor) we couldn’t get enough of the secret lives of superstars.

But what’s been your most shocking celebrity moment? To mark the launch of their new show Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew, Really TV carried out a nationwide survey. And here are the results…

In first place – Britney’s breakdown, with 35% of votes. From Disney Club to rehab the pop-princess had a dramatic fall from grace. Whether shaving her head, marrying in Vegas, driving with her child on her lap, Brit’s been a paparazzi’s dream this decade! Were we the only ones gripped with a morbid fascination, as each new revelation hit the tabloids?

In second place – Rihanna. When mug shots of the pop star were leaked on the internet, the extent of her injuries (inflicted by boyfriend Chris Brown) were revealed (he later plead guilty in court to assault). We were even more shocked because just the night before, R'n'B’s golden couple had been snapped, looking loved-up, at the pre-Grammy’s party (although by the time they left the bash they were arguing). Still, none of us saw that news story coming…

Third place goes to George Michael and that infamous toilet incident (enough said).

Fourth is new-dad Wayne Rooney and those prostitute rumours. We’re not sure what shocked us more – the fact he allegedly cheated on Coleen or the revelation his ‘suitor’ was a 50-year-old grandmother. Even David Beckham’s affair paled into insignificance in comparison (Beck’s sexcapades came in 8th place).

Last but not least, fifth place goes to Kerry Katona. Her slurred interview (a side effect of her ‘bipolar medication’) on This Morning became an instant YouTube hit. FYI Kerry announced this week, she was having elocution lessons. ‘She’s ‘sick of people taking the mickey out of her for being rough,’ said a friend of Kerry's, ‘She thinks a voice coach will make her appear more refined.’

Also on the short list; Hugh Grant’s dalliance with a prostitute (we see a theme developing), Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic rant at a police officer and Lesley Ash’s trout pout.

But why stop there – we want to hear your top five. Which celeb made you gasp in horror this decade? See if you can top this lot of Oh My God moments.

Celebrity Rehab With Dr Drew UK starts weeknights at 9pm, Monday 16 November on Really.
