Mary Portas One Life: Over To You

01 October 2009

Mary Portas

Every week in Grazia, Mary Portas listens to one reader's life dilemma and gives her honest, straight-talking advice. Today, it's your turn to help out Grazia reader Thea who is worried her age will count against her as she tries to get a new job. The age debate's been in the news so much recently (with Arlene vs Aleesha, Fern B vs Holly and the BBC now actively scouting for an older female news reader) -- what do you think? Is Thea wrong to be worried?

‘Is my career over already?’
I think it’s vital to feel passionate about anything in your life which is important to you – including your career. But I’ve just been made redundant at 46 and I’m terrified that mine might be over. In today’s economic climate, I know I should be trying to transfer my skills to new areas and want to feel positive that I’ll find something great. But right now all I feel is vulnerable, panicky and sick inside as I wonder what I’m going to do and who will employ me?
Thea, 46, Brighton
