Since the news broke last month that Paula Abdul would be leaving American Idol, there’s been much speculation about who will replace her: Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, even Liza Minelli’s name has been bantered around. Though we were less then impressed with all these suggestions, at least each one had some singing experience (or miming experience, if you’re a certain ex-Spice Girl.) Unlike the celeb who will actually take Paula’s place, officially announced as … Ellen DeGeneres. Huh? No, Grazia readers this isn’t a joke, she officially announced the news on her talk show and American Idol producers have confirmed it. Now correct us if we’re wrong but isn’t Ellen a comedian / talk show host / actress? So what exactly is she doing judging a singing competition? Mark Darnell, President of Fox says, “Ellen is one of America’s funniest people and a fantastic performer. We feel that her vast entertainment experience, combined with her quick wit and passion for music, will add a fresh new energy to the show.” We’re still not convinced of Ellen’s credentials. She was also a guest judge on the last series of So You Think You Can Dance, and though she was ready with the funnies she had no idea about dancing. Do we want a judge who’s playing for laughs (in which case lets swap Randy for a clown next season) or someone who really knows the ins and outs of the industry? Ellen’s appointment has certainly divided America, if the American Idol message board is anything to go by, but what do the people of Britain think? You tell us….
