The world gathers to say goodbye to Michael

08 July 2009

For the ultimate showman, it was the ultimate show: the Michael Jackson memorial concert at LA's Staples Center was attended by fans from all over the world and broadcast to an audience of millions. It featured stirring performances from Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Usher and John Mayer, emotional speeches from Brooke Shields, Queen Latifah and Smokey Robinson and, of course, touching tributes from Michael's family. Through it all, Michael's gold-plated coffin sat in state at the front of the arena, the focus of all the adoration and grief.

But for us, the most poignant moment was when his daughter Paris took to the stage to express, in the simplest terms, what the King of Pop meant to her and her brothers Prince Michael and Prince Michael II. Barely holding back her tears, and surrounded by her grandparents, aunts and uncles, she sobbed, ‘I just want to say... ever since I was born... Daddy has been the best father you can imagine. And I just want to say I love him so much.' Loved, celebrated and worshipped by billions, he couldn't have asked for a greater accolade.
