Should Madonna be allowed to adopt again?

31 March 2009

She's never shied away from controversy, but even Madonna might be taken aback by the growing tidal wave of criticism over her adoption of three-year-old African orphan Mercy James. The singer is currently in Malawi to rubber-stamp the documentation that will allow her to bring the child to live with her in New York. But critics, including some leading children's charities, fear Madonna is using her celebrity to fast-track the adoption against the wishes of Mercy's extended family. Her uncles and grandmother put Mercy in the orphanage after her mother died in childbirth, because they couldn't afford to care for her, but they were hoping she'd be returned to them when she came of age. One newspaper columnist even said of Madonna: ‘Why is this super-rich egotist allowed a spot of celebrity human-trafficking?' Do you think Madonna should be allowed to adopt Mercy?
