The result of this special venture is a limited edition candle snuff lid which, as of yesterday, is being sold exclusively in store at Harrods and online at www.moltonbrown.co.uk priced £19. Inspired by Molton Brown’s seventies roots, the super-chic snuff lid features Deacon’s signature patterns. The keepsake marks Molton Brown’s remarkable journey from hand-mixing products above a salon in South Molton Street (did you know Molton Brown started out as a hair salon!?) to the global success the brand enjoys today, with products available in over 70 countries worldwide.
The limited edition snuff lid complements Molton Brown’s recently launched anniversary edition Patchouli and Saffron Candle whose fragrance was designed to evoke the spirit of seventies London, with top notes of hot pimento berry, caraway and bergamot.
We were lucky enough to be able to steal Mr Deacon for five minutes to chat to him about this exciting project. Read on, ladies!
Grazia Daily: How did your collaboration with Molton Brown come about?
Giles Deacon: It seemed like such an obvious fit as we share very similar styles. We're both London-born brands, proud of our British heritage, that like to inject eccentricity and playfulness into what we do.
Grazia Daily: What was appealing about working with Molton Brown?
Giles Deacon: I've grown up with Molton Brown and have been a fan of their bath and body products since the beginning. As a brand, they are not afraid to experiment with print and colour which I admire.
Grazia Daily: What was your inspiration for the design on the snuff lid?
Giles Deacon: The design embodies 1970s London when Molton Brown first started out as a salon on South Molton Street. I wanted to sketch a collection of images and prints that were quirky, a little bit sideways and all together a lot of fun. I'm really happy with the final result.
Grazia Daily: How long was the design process?
Giles Deacon: The design process was relatively quick actually. Molton Brown asked me to have fun with my illustration so, once I started to think about the 1970s and what that decade signified for fashion and design, it was something I could be playful with.
Grazia Daily: Tell us a bit about your snuff lid design.
Giles Deacon: I wanted to create a timeless design that reflected Molton Brown's 1970s London roots. Molton Brown prides itself on its colourful, playful side which I wanted to convey in my design. I think the final engraving is fun with a sense of humour that characterises Molton Brown, past and present.
Grazia Daily: Do you have a favourite Molton Brown product? Why is it your favourite?
Giles Deacon: My favourite bath product has to be the Re-charge Black Pepper Body Wash. It's a modern classic. I am also currently enjoying the new Limited Edition Patchouli & Saffron collection. I have the candle on my desk in the studio which has a nice, spicy kick to it.
