Marni Launched Their First Fragrance In Berlin And We Were There To Talk Scents With Carolina Castiglioni: EXCLUSIVE

18 January 2013 by

Marni, the quirky-cool Italian label beloved of celebrities from Carey Mulligan to Rihanna and Elle Fanning has been busy working on its latest creation – the first ever fragrance from the brand. The European launch was celebrated with a swell party in Berlin, and Grazia Daily went along to the snow covered German capital to see what all the fuss was about. Oh, and we met Carolina Castiglioni, daughter and of designer Consuelo Castiglioni - for a quick chat about scents, being a fashionable Mum and her secret fashion weapon...

Grazia Daily: Tell us a bit about how you created the Marni fragrance

Carolina Castiglioni: The first step was to try out all the possible raw materials, like 100 scents and then we say ‘yes’ to this and ‘no’ to that until we had narrowed it down – which took a long time. Then in parallel, while we were concocting the scent, we worked on the bottle, and the packaging and the whole concept. We knew that we wanted the fragrance to be timeless not seasonal.

And we wanted it to be unmistakably Marni so we took a clean, simple shape for the bottle, then we added the polka dots, because they are our signature. The red top is like our jewellery line and the label is as it appears on the ready to wear.

GD: You’re a busy working mum, so we wondered how your style changed when you had your son Fillipo?

CC: I didn’t change, it’s normal for me to be quite laid back, I’m very easy so I didn’t have to change when I had the baby. I’m not someone who wears a lot of makeup, I don’t you know, get changed into eveningwear when I go out. I like to mix different styles together, that’s what interests me, not a a top to toe look. I like casual clothes, or tomboyish clothes

GD: And we wanted to know – what is your fashion fix? Just one item you would put on to make yourself feel instantly chic?

CC: I would say a cape. Like if you have a wonderful cape or coat you can have a really simple outfit on, like just jeans and a shirt but then a good coat makes the whole outfit look cool.

The Marni fragrance will be available in Harrods on February 1st
