Beauty SOS: How To Care For Oily Skin

Rhiannon Chalmers, Blogger, The Mascara Story

'My skin type is naturally combination but I'm extremely sensitive to breakouts, which are usually stress or product related. My skin saviour is Algenist Multi Perfecting Pore Minimiser, a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturiser which balances sebum production, locks in hydration and clears blocked pores. Added bonus, it also makes a great base for makeup.'

'For night time treatment, apply Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil to help rebalance the skin and reduce the amount oil the skin produces. - It’s a total myth that face oils give you spots and make skin greasy. In fact they are a particularly effective rebalancing treatment for oily/combination skin for two reasons. Firstly, their fine molecular structure means they are less likely to block pores and secondly, applying an oil to the skin sends a signal to the sebaceous glands to slow down their own oil production. You will see a difference in a matter of days.'

'My skin has definitely become drier as I’ve aged but it’s still prone to bouts of oiliness which is why I make sure I keep a pot of Darphin’s Organic Aromatic Purifying Balm, Overnight Treatment, £44 handy.  It balances out your skin whilst you sleep so that by morning, any oil imbalances have dispersed and all you’re left with is soft, plump skin!'

'Dr Sebagh's Anti-Pollution Mask is my favourite for when my skin's feeling really clogged up or tired.  It seems to cure small breakouts, unblock my pores, and the tingling sensation makes me feel a lot fresher if I've been staying up too late at night'

'Many have the misconception that oily skin needs continual cleansing to be under control. The fact is the more you cleanse or in particular 'scrub' will actually produce more oil. Using clay cleansers to absorb oil is a start and the Origins Zero Oil toner will help to balance the skins pH. However using a facial oil will help - yes, you read that right!

The secret here is to make sure the facial oil used does not contain mineral oil, petroleum or lanolin - it's those nasties that allow bacteria to breed and are pore-cloggic and comodenegic. Make sure the oil has a good blend of essential oils that 'oxygenate' the skin - oxygen kills bacteria and bacteria thrives in an anaerobic state. Also treating like with like (oil with oil) will balance out the oily condition. Also ensure you are using a moisturizer like Origins Make a Difference +, as hydration is key to keeping skin looking healthy'

'This Sampar Nocturnal Rescue Mask is the perfect product for SOS moments due to breakouts, unusual shininess or painful spots. Not only does this overnight mask mattify but it also soothes the redness and accelerates the healing around the spot/affected area.  It's an effective and quick solution for those unwanted moments of problematic skin and simply requires application at night as with a normal night care regime.  There's no discomfort or thick layers involved.

It creates a protective repairing film, essential for balancing oil production while keeping skin hydrated. Containing lentil extract, omega oils, horse chestnut extract and soy protein, it will nourish the skin without clogging pores. It works through the night to reduce redness, tighten pores and mattify the complexion. Upon waking, the skin is clearer and brighter. It can be used every night whenever your skin needs rescuing.'
