TV makes the beach look soooo easy. Just beautiful blue seas and tropical scenes everywhere you look...in reality, beach trips can be a little more bothersome than blissful when you're not prepared. Sunburn, salty hair and sand in the most ungodly of places are a recipe for disaster when you all you wanted was to work on your tan and drink a mojito at 11am. Plus, all those supermodels looking effortlessly undone yet flawless in their Instagram snaps makes us wonder where we're going wrong as our make up melts off our faces. We've hunted around for the most essential beach bag products to keep you sun-safe and beautiful next time you hit the sand. Have a mojito on us...

1. Truly luscious locks

Making the most of beach hair shouldn't be hard work. All that salt (and coastal winds) can give hair great texture, so try something like Oribe's Après Beach Wave & Shine Spray (£34.00, Space NK), which banishes stiffness but creates tousled, touchable curls AND has a UV filter to protect your hair. Spritz it for ultimate shine and hydration, and that California-cool mop you've always wanted.

2. Paddle-proof make up

Hopefully, it'll be too hot for full make up, so pare things back and play around with some sheerer, summery colours. We love Cargo's Swimmable Eye Shadow Sticks (£15, Debenhams); totally waterproof, dewy-looking shades that can be scribbled across the whole lid super quick. The highly pigmented formula promises not to smudge or fade either, making it perfect for sweaty, sticky days.

3. Stay protected (but still tan!)

We're all smart girls here. We all know we need to wear SPF. But, not all sunscreens are created equal, and Institut Estederm's are top of the pecking order. Not only do they smell great (and not go sticky), the Adaptasun Tanning Body Lotion  works with your body to help improve your own natural defences against the sun, and boost a healthy, radiant tan. Try the Strong Sun for domestic use (below right) and Sea and Tropics (both £42.50, Space NK) for foreign holidays.

4. Get lashed

If you still want to keep your lashes at their fullest and thickest on the beach, go for a waterproof mascara that can withstand everything a day at the beach might throw at you. We love MAC's Splashproof Lash (above left, £14.00, www.maccosmestics.co.uk), a blacker-than-black mascara that will stay in place without a smudge or a crumble in sight. Hurray!

5. Check your reflection

You don't want to cart all these products with you only to realise you can't apply them blind. Pop Paul & Joe's Beauty Mirror (below right, £20.00, BeautyBay.com,) in your bag for cheeky check-ups - it's designed to stand up on its own for hands-free application, and it's large enough to fit your whole face in. Plus, the vintage-feel floral motif is just too pretty to leave at home.

6. Protect your face

If you can't bear to go bare-faced on the beach (see what we did there) but you're concerned about burning, look to La Roche Posay. The Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Ultra Light Tinted Fluid has a whopping SPF50, (above left, £12.37, Boots) but also has the coverage of a BB cream. The lightweight texture means you can keep topping it up without overloading your skin, and it's totally oil free. A Grazia beach bag staple.

7. Pucker up

Lips need SPF, too! Protect your pout with Aesop's Protective Lip Balm (£13.00, below left, www.aesop.com), which has an SPF of 30, and no nasty silicones or petrochemicals. Plus, it has a lovely delicate citrus scent. Yummy.

8. Go for a bold mani

Some shades just look better with a tan. We love Revlon's summer shade 'Oi Beautiful' (£6.49, Boots, above right), a deep purple that looks equally lovely on fingers and toes.

9. Put the love back in

When you hit the showers after your beach day, try Phyto's Phyto Plage After Sun Rehydrating Shampoo (£13.50, below left), which can be used on both the hair and body to remove chlorine and salt build-up, without drying you out or stripping the skin. Perfect to nourish sun-beaten locks and soothe skin.

10. Try an all-in-one

No, we're not talking about a Victorian style bathing suit. The BECCA Beach Tint (£20.00, www.beccacosmetics.com/uk/) is our beach bag dream product; a light matte cream that can be used on cheeks and lips, it's totally water-resistant, oil-free, and full of nourishing antioxidant Vitamin E. Buildable and believable, it comes in a range of shades to suit all skin tones.
