Cara Delevingne is a YSL beauty [YSL]
We're sure you all tuned into YSL's live beauty event yesterday, which saw the brand’s head European makeup artist, Fred Letailleur solving your makeup dilemmas. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions - Fred did a marvellous job at showing us how to nail everything from a dramatic evening eye to festival-perfect makeup. But fret not if you missed the livestream - you can watch the full shebang here. And while we had the expert on tap, we took the chance to grill Fred on some of our burning beauty questions. You can never get enough tips on how to perfect a Delevingne brow, right? Oh, to have Fred on hand EVERY day.
Grazia Daily: What is the inspiration behind the looks you created for Cara in the latest YSL campaign?
Fred Letailleur: Our aim was to reveal the great range of make-up looks that can be created using our iconic products, such as Baby Doll Mascara and Touche Éclat. Take Touche Éclat for example, it is a product that you can play around with as it is easy to apply and really versatile, as well as adaptable to all skin colours. We’ve created a series of how-to films, so whether you are going for a simple day look or something more dramatic for an evening out, we wanted to show how easy (and fun!) it is to use these products.
Grazia Daily: What are the key eye make up trends this summer?
Fred Letailleur: Blue is definitely the key colour this summer. Try royal blue for the most adventurous eye styles. Or navy blue in a metallic tone if you're going for a more subtle look, which is ideal if you are taking your first steps into the realm of blue, as it can sometimes be a little scary! The first trick to create a look using a blue shade is not to go for the ‘all over blue block’ shape, which we saw carried on the catwalk. Instead I recommend using it as an element within the eye make-up. Try applying blue along the lashes with mascara or the lash line with eyeliner, to add a hint of colour to your usual look.

Grazia Daily: What is the ultimate festival eye look?
Fred Letailleur: Liquid eyeliner is a key product for the festival season: not only does it frame the eye easily and effectively, it also lasts throughout the day and night. I applied make-up for a friend who went to Glastonbury last year using the YSL Shocking False Lash Effect Eyeliner to create her look. This lasted her two and a half days!
The easiest way to master a festival look with an eyeliner pen and no mirror is to ensure you do not create too much of a flick. Use the Shocking False Lash Effect Eyeliner flat against the lid to create half of the shape, and then reverse it, applying the liner from the outer eye to the middle. You will feel where the flick will end and will simply need to follow the natural contour of the eye. To create a thicker line, press slightly harder against the eyelid with the liner.
Grazia Daily: What is the best way to create amazing eyes in less than 3 minutes?
Fred Letailleur: Keep it subtle and simple. Using your eye shadow, apply the product onto your brush and place the brush vertically upside down onto the eye. Then lift the brush from the root of the lashes upwards; this will give you intensity across the lashes and will blend as you go upwards. To keep it simple and pull this off in 3 minutes, I would recommend using this technique with a medium brown shade. Using a bold colour in such a short amount of time will complicate the look. Remember to frame the eye with a lick of Baby Doll Mascara to finish the style.
Grazia Daily: Which eye look suits everyone no matter their eye shape, their ethnicity or face shape?
Fred Letailleur: A look that suits everyone is a sculpted, contoured look, which involves applying a medium brown colour into the socket and v-shape of the eye. Gently blend this towards the outer eye and this will create a subtle look but not too smoky. This is very simple and will suit any eye shape.
Grazia Daily: Which eye make up products should every girl own?
Fred Letailleur: Touche Éclat is a make-up bag staple that all girls should own; it’s a great tool to highlight and brighten the eye and other areas of the face. I use it every time I apply make-up. In terms of eye shadows, a classic highlighter shade is great, then black or brown kohl depending on your preference. And of course mascara, as it’s a versatile make-up accessory; add a light layer of mascara to the top lash line for the daytime, and then layer on the top and bottom lashes for a more striking nighttime look. I love Baby Doll for creating immediate intensity.
Grazia Daily: Brows – tell us what we need to know
Fred Letailleur: First of all, eyebrows are sisters not twins. You shouldn’t try to make them too symmetrical. When you shape your brows to enhance the perfect arch, always start on the inner corner of the brow and define a line underneath. Then, follow the natural shape of the brow to the arch and then follow this back, extending it to the appropriate length. If you find you have gaps in your eyebrows, the eyebrow pencil is an essential tool in my opinion. To recreate the brows and fill in the gaps, I sometimes use two different shades of eyebrow pencil for the super constructed eyebrow look. You should always select a shade lighter than the hair colour of your eyebrows, not to overkill the brows. Powder is also useful for providing brow intensity and YSL’s Couture Palette number 2 is great for this. To tame flyaway brow hairs, you can use eyebrow gels or a wax that will help to set the eyebrows.
Grazia Daily: How do you look good on the beach?
Fred Letailleur: Create great eyelashes using a waterproof mascara, and team that with a bright colour on the eyelid. Use a block colour or coloured eyeliner to really brighten the eye for a summery look. For the face, I would say take a BB cream, which has a light coverage but usually contains an SPF, giving you a natural look whilst protecting your skin from the suns rays. Then finish with a liquid base cheek and lip stain. YSL’s Baby Doll Kiss & Blush range can help create this look, with 12 playful shades in the collection, it will compliment any woman.

Grazia Daily: What are the key makeup brushes every girl should own?
Fred Letailleur: Two key brushes that I recommend for any make-up kit are the small flat eye shadow brush and the large long blending brush. The small eye shadow brush will help achieve precision with the tip. The large blending brush is useful for whenever you create a smoky eye. Within the YSL Couture Palette, the liner brush is designed to create a sharp effect and the second brush is for a smoothing and blending effect, an ideal application technique for the lid area.
