Summer Beauty SOS: Make-Up Expert Kay Montano Gives Us Her Top Tips

13 June 2013 by

If you’ve already had the chance to catch up with the latest issue of Grazia, you might have realised that we’re in full summer holiday swing. Regardless of the not so tropical temperatures outside, we’re already obsessing over our holiday make-up bag and the hottest new products that we just can’t wait to pop in our beach bags.

Just for you, we managed to catch up with the wonderful Kay Montano, makeup guru and beauty ambassador for M&S Beauty, who answered all your burning summer beauty questions. Read on and learn, ladies!

Grazia Daily: Is bare-faced chic really possible?

Kay Montano: Absolutely! Bare faced is never really bare faced- it’s glowing skin, a flushed cheek, natural eyes with a hint of mascara finished off with a nude or subtle lip gloss/tint.  But, this look has more to it than just the make-up. ‘Chic’ is an overall look which incorporates your hair and your fashion style, so the key here is to look well-groomed, ladies!

Grazia Daily: A lot of my girlfriends say that it's good to let your skin breathe during a summer holiday, especially during the days when soaking up the sun. Is this true?

Kay Montano: Of course this is so important; you are already going to be using extra SPF on your skin so there isn’t really any need to add make-up, too. The only items that you may like to wear during the day are a tinted lip product and a coat of long lasting mascara. I love Autograph Aqua Proof water resistant eyes, £9.50 and Autograph Ultimate Shine Twist up lip colour, £9.50.

Grazia Daily: In your opinion, what's the best waterproof mascara to avoid any panda-eyed pool moments?

Kay Montano: I love the Diego Dalla Palma Semi permanent technical mascara, £17 as it gives a natural coat to the lash but really stays throughout the day.

Grazia Daily: My manicure always fades so quickly in the sun. What can I do to prevent this?

Kay Montano: I always suggest topping up a manicure with a good top coat every couple of days, not only will it give a high shine but it also brings back the nail colour to life. Try Leighton Denny Crystal Finish Top coat, £11.00.

Follow Kay's top tips and you too can look as good as Rosie and Kate!

Grazia Daily: What one product will take me from beach to bar in a matter of seconds come sundown?

Kay Montano: Lipstick is the easiest way to transform make-up from day to night. It’s all about the bold, colourful pout this summer!

Grazia Daily: Do I need to use a different SPF on my face to the one I already have for my body?

Kay Montano: It's so important to have separate face and body SPF products!  You wouldn't use your regular body cream as a face moisturizer so why would you use the same SPF for face and body? SPF's for the body can be a little heavy for the face and can tend to clog pores. I love the sun care products from Apivita.

Grazia Daily: I always forget to pack a lip SPF. What's your favourite?

Kay Montano: I am not a fan of lip SPF’s. I prefer to just keep lips super hydrated by using a rich lip balm such as - Aptivita Pomegranate Lip Care, £5.00.

Grazia Daily: I really want to start embracing some colour on my eyes and lips on the beach this summer. Where should I start?

Kay Montano: If you really want to use make up whilst on the beach, I would use a multipurpose lip and cheek tint, and a cream eye shadow for eyes. I’m personally not a big fan of beach make up - whilst on holiday less is most definitely more!
