We interrupt your Fashion Week frenzy to bring you news just in that none other than our favourite bad girl pop princess Rihanna is set to be the next MAC girl. Joining the likes of Lady Gaga, Nicky Minaj and Iris Apfel, RiRi has scored a ground-breaking deal with the cosmetics company that she can add to her ever-growing list of accolades.
Just as the fash crowd went mad for her River Island collection, now the beauty world can share this excitement with the news of her forthcoming makeup line. The MAC agreement, which Rihanna called a “no brainer”, will release even more of her creative side when the collection of colour cosmetics roll out later this year. The first product will be a fiery red lipstick called RiRi Woo (yes, a play on the brand’s No.1 best-selling lippy Ruby Woo) and is based on the one that the singer wears. Yup, we’re one step close to being just like RiRi herself!

The collection of cosmetics will coincide with Rihanna’s Diamonds Tour gigs in early May in New York and rumour has it that MAC will even be hosting a pop-up shop at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where she is opening her tour. Eek, it’s just all too exciting for words.
“When you think of makeup, the brand that pops into your mind — for something legit — is MAC,” the singer told WWD. “Whatever colour you want, it’s like ‘Let’s go to MAC.’ I’ve been using MAC on tour for such a long time it was a natural fit for me. I have always loved makeup, and I always said that if I do it, I want to do it with a credible brand.” Well you’ve chosen well then haven’t you RiRi.
Rihanna doesn’t see much difference between creating makeup and writing songs — or even designing clothing, for that matter. “Being creative is something that I love, so I can put that into different outlets. Music happens to be the first thing that I gravitated to, and now music opens doors to just so many different opportunities, and they all tie in. My makeup looks, my fashion looks…they help me to express myself as an artist. I think it helps people to understand me or my mood, my story.”
Unlike previous celeb collaborations, Rihanna’s will be a little bit more special as it’s more than just a one-off project. “We always say that MAC likes to go on a date but doesn’t really want to go into a relationship,” said John Demsey, group president of the Estée Lauder, MAC’s parent company. “This relationship with Rihanna is a long-term one that involves the development of four distinct colour initiatives.” Yes, that four whole collections for you groupies to feast on.
The collections, to be known as RiRi [Hearts] MAC, will be released throughout 2013. MAC has also decided to call Rihanna, who incidentally turns 25 years old today, a “creative partner” rather than a collaborator. Her name will appear on the packaging and her signature will be embossed on the RiRi Woo lipstick case as well as on the bullets of the summer lipsticks and other Fall and Holiday pieces.
We are super excited to see the campaign too, shot by the hottest photographer duo on this planet, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. And until we set our eyes on those and get hold of the collection in May, we’ll be on the edge of our seats. Loving your work Bad Gal Riri…
